UPSC Prelims Preparation Strategy: A Practical 6-Step Plan
1. Understand the exam before you study
The civil services exam has three stages — Prelims, Mains and Interview. Prelims is a screening test, so your goal is simply to clear the cut-off comfortably, not to master every possible topic.
Download the official syllabus and read it line by line. Mark which topics are static (polity, history, geography) and which are dynamic (current affairs, economy, environment).
2. Solve previous year questions first
Before opening any book, read 5–7 years of previous papers. You will see the question style, the weight of each subject and the kind of statements UPSC loves to test.
- Tag each question by subject and topic
- Note which topics repeat across years
- Keep a list of 'doubt' topics to study first
3. Build the base with NCERT
NCERT books give you clear concepts with simple language. Read them once for understanding, then make short notes. Quick revision gists help when time is short.
4. One standard source per subject
Resource hoarding is the most common mistake. Choose one reliable book or note per subject and revise it repeatedly instead of collecting five.
5. Revise three times
Learn the topic, revise within a week, then revise again before the exam. Short notes, flowcharts and gists make each revision faster than the previous one.
6. Test weekly and analyse every mistake
Attempt a full or sectional test every week under exam timing. The value is in the analysis: write down every wrong answer and the reason — concept gap, silly mistake or wrong guess.
