NCERT Reading Strategy for UPSC & State PCS (and Why Gists Help)

Why NCERT still matters

NCERT textbooks explain concepts in simple language and are the foundation for history, geography, polity, economy and science. Candidates who skip them often struggle with basics later.

How to read a chapter

  • Skim headings and summary first
  • Read once for understanding, without highlighting everything
  • Close the book and write 5–8 key points from memory
  • Mark facts you were unable to recall

Make one page of notes per chapter

Keep notes short enough to revise in minutes. Use tables, timelines and flowcharts instead of paragraphs.

Where gists fit in

After your first reading, a quick-revision gist lets you revisit the entire book in hours instead of weeks. This is especially useful in the last two months before the exam.

Common mistakes

  • Reading everything but never revising
  • Switching between too many books
  • Skipping maps and diagrams
